The UN high commissioner for human rights’ spokesman, Ravina Shamdasani, urged governments to defend Palestinians from attacks by Israeli settlers and security forces in the occupied West Bank.
She encouraged nations “with influence to do everything in their power” to put an end to bloodshed in the occupied West Bank in additional statements made to Geneva-based media, according to Al Jazeera.
Shamdasani made the remarks in response to the growing number of settlers’ assaults on Palestinians and their property. Since Friday, there have been at least four such deaths among Palestinians, many of which were carried out with Israeli military assistance.
Numerous Palestinians have reportedly suffered injuries at the hands of Israeli security officers and settlers, including those caused by weapons.
Cars and other buildings totaling hundreds of units have been set on fire, according to Shamdasani.
“As the occupying force, Israel must do everything within its ability to guarantee and restore public order and safety in the occupied West Bank to the greatest extent possible. This duty involves defending Palestinians against attacks by settlement groups and putting an end to Israeli security forces’ illegal use of force against Palestinians,” she continued.
