According to an examination of Mr. Malkinson’s treatment, the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) “failed” him after he spent 17 years in prison for a rape he did not commit. Had the CCRC acted appropriately, he may have been cleared more than ten years earlier.
In light of the results, Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced that she was now attempting to have CCRC chair Helen Pitcher removed from her position.
“Lays bare how the CCRC obstructed my fight for justice and cost me an extra decade wrongly imprisoned,” stated Mr. Malkinson in his report.
He went on, “After such a damning study, Helen Pitcher and her leadership team ought to be fired if they don’t want to step down.
However, he persisted in his innocence, spending a further ten years behind bars before being released in 2020.
When his charges were overturned in 2023 due to fresh DNA evidence that would have connected a different guy to the crime, his case made news.
