On Friday, Junaid Akbar, a member of the National Assembly (MNA) for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was chosen head of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The position has been unfilled since the government took office after the February 2024 elections.
With the capacity to call any person or document from government agencies about financial matters, the PAC is regarded as one of the most potent legislative groups.
According to legislative rules set up after the general elections in 2008, the opposition has historically been given the PAC chair, a practice that still exists today.
The NA and Senate opposition leaders, Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz, respectively, suggested Akbar for the job during the conference called to elect the PAC chairman, PML-N Chief Whip Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.
