The United States has sanctioned the leader of the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and charged it with genocide.
Hemedti, whose real name is Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, is being punished for his involvement in “systematic” atrocities against the Sudanese people throughout the 20-month battle, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s statement on Tuesday.
According to him, cruel sexual abuse against women on the basis of ethnicity and the killing of “men and boys – even infants” were committed by the RSF and affiliated militias.
According to Blinken, the militias have also killed innocent persons trying to escape the fighting and targeted retreating civilians.
“Based on this information, I have now concluded that members of the RSF and allied militias have committed genocide in Sudan,” he stated.
