After entering Syria on foot, a US man was imprisoned for months in a Syrian prison before being released by men brandishing hammers when rebels toppled Bashar al-Assad’s government.
Residents in the vicinity of the capital Damascus discovered the individual, who then revealed his identity to the US press partner news as Travis Timmerman.
It comes as rebels claim they plan to shut down Assad’s infamously cruel prisons and find individuals responsible for killing or torturing inmates.
“We will pursue them in Syria, and we ask countries to hand over those who fled so we can achieve justice,” said Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the rebel group and also known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani.
Social media footage showed Mr. Timmerman resting on a couch while locals conversed.
