WASHINGTON: In response to the issue of Americans being held in the war-torn nation, the United States has threatened to place bounties on the heads of Afghan Taliban officials.
I recently learned that there are more American captives being held by the Taliban than previously thought. In a post on X, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, “If this is true, we will have to immediately place a VERY BIG bounty on their top leaders, maybe even bigger than the one we had on [Osama] bin Laden.”
Secretary Rubio’s statement that more Americans might be held in Afghanistan than previously believed abruptly escalated the situation.
Days after the US and the Afghan Taliban leadership exchanged captives in one of former President Joe Biden’s last actions, the threat was made.
