Venezuela has been instructed “to refrain from destroying” the results of the July presidential election by the UN Human Rights Committee.
At the heart of the disagreement about the election’s outcome have been the voting tallies, which are an official analysis of the votes cast at each polling place.
The National Electoral Council (CNE), which is affiliated with the government, proclaimed President Nicolás Maduro the victor but did not present the vote totals to support its assertion.
With the assistance of certified election observers, the opposition gathered and released over 80% of the vote totals, which it claims demonstrate that Edmundo González, its candidate, won by a landslide.
