Online rumors have been spreading that the Punjab Police have declared a crackdown on reporters and journalists who are not members of a media group or press club. But the assertion is untrue.
The false information started when someone posted a picture of Punjab’s Inspector General of Police, Dr. Usman Anwar, on Facebook on October 24 along with the Urdu phrase, “Long live Punjab Police.” Take action against phony journalists.
According to the post, police would begin regularly reviewing press cards and would lodge complaints against journalists who are not affiliated with a press club, TV station, or newspaper.
WhatsApp groups have reportedly reported similar claims.
