ISLAMABAD—The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has denounced the district and sessions court’s “ridiculous” ruling to dismiss the party founder Imran Khan’s and his wife Bushra Bibi’s requests to have their sentences in the iddat case suspended.
PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan announced outside the Islamabad court that the party would be appealing the decision in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The opposition leader in the National Assembly expressed regret over the politicization and weaponization of personal issues between a husband and wife, saying, “We will challenge this verdict in the high court at once.”
The party’s response follows the announcement of the ruling by Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka, which was deferred until Tuesday.
In February of this year, the PTI founder and Bushra received seven-year prison sentences each after a trial court ruled that their nikah was phony in response to a motion filed by Bushra’s ex-husband, Khawar Maneka, to have the couple’s marriage declared unlawful.
On January 16, 2024, the pair was indicted in the iddat case. Following a 14-hour trial in the Adiala jail, the trial court postponed making a decision on February 2 and on February 3 sentenced Khan and Bushra to seven years in prison each.
