A few feet apart and with their hands in their pockets, they appear to be engaged in a face-off for around 30 seconds in the video until Mr. Amesbury abruptly strikes the man in the face.
The congressman says he was “threatened on the street following an evening out with friends,” though it’s unclear what they were discussing.
The video of the incident was deemed “shocking” by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. While an investigation is conducted, the Labour MP has been placed on leave from the party.
A 55-year-old male was voluntarily examined under caution and “released pending further inquiries,” according to Cheshire Police.
The incident took place in Main Street, Frodsham, early on Saturday morning.
As members of the public step in, Mr. Amesbury repeatedly punches the man after knocking him to the ground in other previously released film taken from a different position.
In a statement, the Member of Parliament claimed to have spoken with “Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident”.
He stated that while he would not be speaking more, he would assist the police if necessary.
A 56-year-old man was found guilty in July of last year of stalking Mr. Amesbury at his constituency office.
He was observed looking through the glass, according to the prosecution, and questioned the guards about their degree of security.
