As he greeted the next US president, Vladimir Putin praised Donald Trump as “courageous” for his response to an assassination attempt.
In the 2024 election, Mr. Trump triumphed handily, securing five battleground states and easily obtaining the 270 Electoral College votes required to win the president.
Mr. Trump promised to put an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours during his campaign, but he did not provide any details.
While acknowledging the president-elect’s “desire to restore relations,” the Russian leader said he has “no idea” what to anticipate from Mr. Trump’s second term in office during his remarks on Thursday in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, has already congratulated the Republican on his victory.
