In a 5-1 vote, the Shenandoah County School Board decided to rename Ashby-Lee Elementary School in Quicksburg and Stonewall Jackson High School.
Advocates from the community had been urging a reversal, claiming that the 2020 name change was controversial.
The vote represented the first such reversal in US history.
On Thursday, a sizable number of people attended the school board’s public meeting to hear a number of arguments from locals on opposing sides of the dispute.
Confederate sculptures were removed from public areas in Virginia and other states after George Floyd’s murder in May 2020 and a summer of racial justice turmoil.
The Democratic governor at the time, Ralph Northam, wrote a letter to school board chairs around the state, stating: “School names and mascots that honor Confederate leaders or sympathizers should be changed.
