A wildlife enthusiast photographer becomes enthralled with the nighttime exploits of an unexpected guest.
In the peaceful village of Powys, the tiny but industrious cleaner, affectionately called “Welsh Tidy Mouse,” has transformed the photographer’s shed into the setting for an entrancing show.
The fascinating series of events started with a puzzling discovery, as 75-year-old wildlife enthusiast Rodney Holbrook told Sky News. His attention was initially drawn to the absence of nuts from his shed.
“I went in early October one morning and there were no nuts in there, and I thought I put nuts in yesterday,” he said, explaining the riddle that perplexed him.
But as additional objects disappeared and then reappeared carefully packed in a box, the story grew increasingly complicated. Holbrook set up a night camera, determined to find out. It caught what was both puzzling and fascinating: a small mouse carefully cleaning the shed.
The mouse’s nocturnal visits have become a routine, even though Holbrook thinks it could not be a permanent resident.
“I don’t believe it is genuinely residing there since I haven’t figured out how it is getting in. It might be,” he thought, adding to the mystery surrounding the exploits of this industrious mouse.
Surprisingly, this hardworking mouse isn’t the only one who goes on nighttime adventures. Although Holbrook was mostly a solitary presence, he occasionally saw other mice, suggesting that they had a common interest in the secret nut hoard.
“It’s only the one doing it, but I’ve had one video where I saw two on there, or three counting the one tidying up,” he said.
Holbrook’s observations suggest that the “Welsh Tidy Mouse” has a cunning plan in place. In addition to keeping things neat, it appears to be deliberately concealing nuts beneath objects, maybe to protect its wealth from would-be rivals.
Holbrook is content to let nature take its course, even in the face of demands to stage humorous scenarios. “I’m just going to leave it at that. He said, “Just naturally let whatever’s going to happen happen,” enjoying the mystique and fascination of the little cleaner’s bedtime routine.
