All at once, the trucks pulled up, transporting hundreds of horses escaping the Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles.
Some horses arrived alone, while others were on trailers with other animals. While many came with their owners, others were taken in by animal control or their rescuers. Donkeys, pigs, and tiny horses trailed behind.
The Los Angeles Equestrian Center was converted into a contemporary Noah’s Ark in less than a day. As part of its formal position as one of the city’s major animal shelters, it has provided shelter to hundreds of animals from the tragedy during the past week.
In addition to the approximately 500 horses that currently reside there, the property, which is nestled in the shadow of Griffith Park, has welcomed almost 200 more.
