What did the record air conditioner sales in India tell us about the heatwave?

On the outskirts of Delhi, India, Govind Ram, a garbage merchant, gave in to his children's pleas and bought an air conditioner in May.

His school-age children were complaining of “choking” heat, and the city and its neighborhood were being scorched by an intense heatwave. Mr. Ram purchased the air conditioner for his kids’ bedroom with his savings. He claims that his electricity bill increased to seven times the normal amount last month, so this comfort has come at a price.
“I’ve had the worst summers with only a fan.” However, I had to purchase our family’s first air conditioner this year because my kids suffered so severely,” Mr. Ram stated.
India has experienced more than 700 heatwaves in the last 50 years, but this summer’s intense and persistent.

This is the first I’ve seen in my forty-five years in the air conditioning business. Sales are probably going to more than quadruple this summer compared to last year, which is somewhat unexpected, according to B Thiagarajan, general director of Blue Star, a well-known cooling and refrigeration company.
