Although street crimes have long been a problem in the nation’s financial center, two kidnappings in a week have alarmed city dwellers, especially in an area where crime is not unusual.
Mohammed Sarim, age seven, was reportedly kidnapped on January 7 from Sector 5 in North Karachi, inside the boundaries of the Bilal Colony police station. Two further children went missing on January 14 after the event.
Unfortunately, being the victim of criminal activity is nothing new to the city’s inhabitants. From January to November 2024, the city saw a startling 66,530 street criminal events, according to data from the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).
When all street crime incidences are taken into account, an average of 6,048 crimes are perpetrated each month.
