Lyle and Erik Menendez are now closer than ever to a possible second chance at freedom after serving 35 years in prison.
The brothers, who were found guilty in 1989 of the murders of José and Kitty Menendez, their parents, have long insisted that years of physical and sexual abuse, not aspirations to inherit their wealth, were the reason behind the killings in their Beverly Hills home.
In California, they are presently serving life sentences without the chance of release.
The case, which has captivated and divided the country for decades, has been turned upside down by a combination of fresh evidence and public interest.
