In India’s Karnataka state’s Ramanagara district, a lady was arrested by police on Wednesday for selling her newborn child to settle her husband’s debts, according to the Economic Times.
The 40-year-old lady sold her 30-day-old infant for 150,000 Indian rupees, but the police saved the child, who was then taken to a Mandya charity home.
Two days after the baby went missing on December 7, the woman’s husband accused his wife of being involved in the loss of their newborn boy and reported her missing.
The couple has five kids and has had financial difficulties.
“My wife suggested a few days ago that we sell our newborn to a childless couple for more than INR 300,000, which I owe in loans.”
