Constance Marten and her partner Mark Gordon denied any wrongdoing and declined to respond to numerous inquiries regarding their child’s location at the time of their detention on suspicion of child neglect.
Following their alleged disappearance in February of last year, Constance Marten, 36, and Mark Gordon, 49, were located by Brighton police. The pair was reportedly living in a tent with their infant, Victoria.
A trainer next asks her: “Tell me now because I’m going to send the dog into the wood to try and find someone so you tell me where it is now.”
In response, Marten was taken into custody once more for hiding the child’s birth, which she is heard to have said was “not an arrestable offence” and that “you can’t arrest someone for hiding a pregnancy.”
“I refuse to prepare a sandwich for you.”
Among the officers that helped with the arrest was Sergeant Robert Button. He reported to the Old Bailey jury on Tuesday that the couple smelt “unclean and unwashed” and that Marten looked to be wearing “furniture stuffing” for insulation.
Sergeant Button is heard introducing himself to Gordon and stating, “Hello. I’m sorry, but could you perhaps pause for a moment? Okay, stop. I have to talk to you.”
Gordon protested that he was hungry and “wasn’t doing anything” in response to questions about why he was fleeing.
Then a distraught Marten stepped in, imploring, “Please stop with him; he’s not well. God, I’m not able to watch. Give him some space. Give it to him to consume. He’s going hungry.”
