The concept of birthright citizenship has been embraced by a number of countries worldwide, granting citizenship to anybody born within its boundaries.
Known as jus soli, or “right of the soil,” this practice is particularly acknowledged in the following nations:
United States: Regardless of the immigration status of their parents, anyone born in the United States is guaranteed citizenship under the 14th Amendment.
Canada: Adopting a similar strategy, Canada grants citizenship to anybody born on its soil.
Mexico: Regardless of the legal status of their parents, everybody born in Mexico is guaranteed citizenship by Mexican law.
Brazil: With very few exclusions, those born in Brazil are granted citizenship.
Argentina: Anyone born in Argentina is automatically a citizen, much like in Brazil.
