The chancellor said the next spending review “has to be completed” by April 2025 when questioned about the government’s spending review, which is a comprehensive multi-year plan on how departments would spend their money. The chancellor was speaking on Tuesday at the Lords’ Economic Affairs Committee.
“And of course,” he continued, “if the general election is in October, that will mean it’s very, very tight.”
The statements were made on the same day that Prime Minister Rishi Suank declared he would be hosting a summit of the European Political Community in the UK on July 18, suggesting that a vote was not expected to take place prior to the occasion.
Following pressure from opposition groups to hold a public poll and rumors that began to circulate in the media, Mr. Sunak announced last week that he would not hold a general election on May 2, which is also the date of many municipal elections across the nation.
Although he only stated back in January that his “working assumption” was that it will take place in the second half of this year, he has yet to provide more details about when he intends to address the electorate.
