Citing “totally unexplainable” spending, US President Donald Trump has initiated action to shut down the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The Trump administration has been advised to think about resuming humanitarian financing until alternative solutions can be found, though, by WHO chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
He stated during a briefing on Wednesday that 50 countries had experienced disruptions in HIV treatments and other services.
At a virtual press conference in Geneva, Dr. Tedros made his first public remarks regarding the US assistance funding freeze, saying, “There are actions that the US government is taking… which we’re concerned are having a serious impact on global health.”
He specifically cited the suspension of the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, or PEPFAR.
