K2 is frequently referred to as the “savage mountain” since it crosses the Pakistan-China border in the Karakoram mountain range. K2 is the second-tallest peak in the world (after Everest), rising 8,611 meters and jutting into the sky like a snow-capped pyramid. It is also possibly the most difficult to ascend. In the second season of the Extreme podcast, Peak Danger, host and historian Natalia Mehlman Petrzela tells the terrifying story of newlyweds Cecilie Skog and Rolf Bae, who climbed K2 in 2008 and ended up in a catastrophe that claimed the lives of 11 climbers in two days.
Skog was captivated by the mountains at an early age. She says that even as a little child, she was frequently drawn to the majestic peaks that surrounded her at birth.
