This is one of the most unexpected soap opera plot twists on British TV.
Twenty individuals in a small, close-knit, and already unstable village—how do you get rid of them?
Put a murderous serial killer on the run? Call in a catastrophic event?
While no soap opera executive would voluntarily reduce the scope of their program, most would jump at the chance to eliminate a significant number of cast members.
But when Hannah Cheers took over Hollyoaks earlier this year, it was declared that the program will have its own budget, cast, and personnel.
Rather than that, she thought of a more audacious plan: to go forward in time by an entire year.
“It actually gave us so much more scope for the ‘what if’ questions, and a soap audience loves the what, where, and how the hell have you got there?” Says cheers.
And suddenly, this was far more important than a plane hitting the community, since that could only result in death, misery, and a coffin.
On the other hand, our system has resulted in babies, secrets, puzzles, renewed old ties, new friendships, and romances just by shifting back in time by a year.
