The 40-year-old Jyothi will always remember the day she nearly passed away. Pulicat Lake, one of three significant wetlands that draws monsoon rain clouds from October to December, had a typical early start. Pulicat Lake, a charming lagoon almost half the size of London, is situated on India’s east coast, 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Chennai. Its sandy borders are dotted with pink flowers. Fishermen put their nets into the clear seas, and thousands of migratory birds flock to its numerous islets.
Jyothi, who only goes by one name, had left for work with ten other ladies at 9:00 on that May 2022 day. The mud walkways had been drenched by rain.
