The 26-year-old may very well be the face of track and field—a distinction that hasn’t been held by an American for a long time. But he is headed for similar success in Paris after winning three gold medals at the World Championships.
Lyles was always expected to compete in the 100-, 200-, and 4×100-meter sprints this summer—the three events in which he took home the gold in Hungary the previous year. But three is insufficient.
Lyles participated in the silver-medal winning 4×400 relay at this month’s World Athletics Indoor Championships. Lyles has only competed in this race once since going pro in 2016.
