Residents of the city are embracing the New York subway’s decision to bring some of its iconic “R1-9” railcars back into operation, nearly a century after it first debuted.
For a brief period, the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA), which runs the extensive and occasionally despised subway system in the Big Apple, is bringing R1-9s back to service with their early 20th-century accessories.
For example, in one vehicle, a 1960s-style advertisement honors “the late president” with a monochrome image of John F. Kennedy.
New Yorkers are celebrating the historical blast, which was made possible by a partnership between the MTA and the Transit Museum. Some are even dressing up to fit the role.
