The left-wing candidate Yamandu Orsi won a weekend runoff to become the next president of Uruguay, a country of 3.4 million people in South America.
In a second-round run-off on Sunday, Orsi of the Broad Front alliance defeated Alvaro Delgado of the center-right National Party, who received 45.9 percent of the vote, with 49.8 percent.
Following five years of a conservative government, his win signifies the return of a center-left government to the President of Uruguay.
