ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari voiced concern that seminaries would be registered under the Societies Act if the madrassa bill becomes law, potentially subjecting the nation to sanctions from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), and other organizations.
The president objected to the “Societies Registration Amendment Bill 2024,” which would have registered madrassas, according to sources on Friday.
He drew attention to a possible conflict of interest that might arise from the registration procedure and voiced worries about possible harm to Pakistan’s reputation abroad and its internal security.
Earlier this month, President Zardari objected to the “Societies Registration Amendment Bill 2024” and returned it.
