Although Zoe Saldaña won the Oscar for the first time, several people were critical of her for winning for Emilia Pérez.
A reporter from a Mexican news organization confronted the Avatar actor in a pressroom about the criticism her movie received for its portrayal of Mexico, calling it “hurtful.”
“First of all, I’m very, very sorry that you and so many Mexicans felt offended,” Saldaña remarked in response to Zoe’s defense of her work and the movie. We never meant to do that. I will stand by the statement that we spoke and came from a position of love.
“I don’t share your opinion,” she added. Mexico wasn’t the main focus of this film, in my opinion.
