The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPP-P) drew lines of battle for the general elections scheduled for February 8, with the former accusing the latter of utilizing illegal methods to regain power for the fourth time.
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who is also PPP-P’s nominee for prime minister, claimed that PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif intended to exert pressure on the “administration” in order to sway the election results in an interview with international media.
The PPP chairman has been accusing Nawaz of trying to use a backdoor to take back power four times. The former foreign minister claimed last month that Nawaz was “relying on something other than people” to take over as prime minister.
It is important to note that former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz signed the Charter of Democracy (CoD) in London in 2006. A collaborative effort to combat the “dictatorship” was one of the CoD’s main objectives.
But despite pressure from the PML-N, the PPP stalwart anticipated that the caretaker government will not meddle in the next elections. In addition, he voiced optimism that the PPPP will win elections and constitute the next administration.
In order to reestablish the credibility of elections in the nation, he went on to say that the next elections should be free, fair, and transparent. He also added that all political parties should be treated equally in the lead-up to the polls.
