Nigeria’s 2023 AFCON loss to Ivory Coast ends “a story for the ages.”

We look at why the Africa Cup of Nations may have been the best ever after Ivory Coast defeated Nigeria.

In addition to completing the most amazing of comeback victories in sports, Ivory Coast’s victory over Nigeria represented the journey of a team, a continent, and a man.

The Elephants’ thrilling 2-1 triumph over the heavily favored Super Eagles, captained by African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen, in the championship game was an incredible accomplishment.

However, this was a competition that ignited and never extinguished a flame that burned with the dreams of people all across Africa, creating upsets and tales that would live on in the memories of people for a very long time—not just elephants.

For a broader audience, it was poetic that Sebastian Haller, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in July 2022, scored the winning goal; nonetheless, words cannot express the immense meaning this must hold for the player and his family. “Haller’s story is one for the ages,” as the Confederation of African Football, the continent’s regulatory body of the sport, put it.

It all started when Ivory Coast gave up in Group A. It was the initial significant tale of

the competition and added to the remarkable comeback against Nigeria on Sunday.
The hosts, who were by no means favorites, defeated Guinea 2-0 to start the tournament, sending a message that maybe there was still hope for the two-time champions among their more well-known adversaries.

In fact, there was some strain on the Super Eagles going into their second group-stage match against the Elephants. William Troost-Ekong, the captain of Nigeria, scored a penalty kick to end the game and calm Nigerian anxieties after their point in the opening encounter.
A unique AFCON was undoubtedly taking place when the Ivorians collapsed in the final group encounter, a 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea in Abidjan.
