Bali: Foreign tourists to pay $10 entry tax from Valentine’s Day

One of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, Bali, now charges foreign visitors a levy of 150,000 rupiah (£7.60; $9.60).

According to Indonesian officials, this is done to preserve the ecosystem and culture of the island.

Bali is well-known for its stunning scenery, clean beaches, and surfable waves.

Nearly 4.8 million tourists visited Bali between January and November of last year, according to official figures.

The tourist tax, which was first announced last year, came into effect from Wednesday – Valentine’s Day.

It is applicable to international visitors arriving in the province from overseas or other regions of the nation; domestic visitors from Indonesia are not covered. It is recommended that travelers use the Love Bali website to make their payment in advance.

Tourism provided about 60% to Bali’s annual GDP before the outbreak.

With almost 100,000 arrivals in November 2023, Australia accounted for the greatest share of foreign visitors to Bali, according to the province’s statistics bureau. After that came travelers from Singapore, China, and India.

However, in recent years, unruly tourists in Bali have agitated residents.

In March of last year, a Russian guy who had stripped off on Mount Agung—which Hindus consider to be the home of the gods—was deported from Bali.

In the same month, following a wave of incidents involving persons disobeying traffic restrictions, officials announced their intention to outlaw the use of motorcycles by foreign visitors.

Another incident that caused controversy in 2021 was a three-minute video that went viral showing a Russian couple having sex on Mount Batur.
