The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced Friday that the deadline for filing candidacy papers for Senate elections on 48 vacant seats will be March 16.
The electoral watchdog said that Senate elections would be held on April 2 to fill vacant seats. The ECP has chosen March 19 as the day for the inspection of nomination documents.
The revised list of candidates will be issued on the 26th of this month, and candidates can withdraw their candidacy papers by March 17, according to the election regulator.
It is worth noting that 52 seats in the upper house of parliament will become empty on Tuesday, when the present Senators’ six-year terms expire.
The elections, however, would be held to elect 48 senators, as four reserved seats for the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) were removed with the 25th Constitutional amendment.
Members would be elected for seven general seats, two women, two technocrat seats, including Ulema, and one non-Muslim seat from Sindh and Punjab.
In addition, MPs from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan would vote on seven general seats, two women, and two seats for technocrats, including Ulema.
Members of the National Assembly will vote for one general seat and one seat for technocrats, including Ulema from the federal capital, according to the statement.
The ECP had previously chosen returning officers (ROs) in Islamabad and the four provinces to conduct of the election.
