Sonia Gandhi of the Congress calls India’s PM Modi ‘financially crippling’ the opposition.

The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is allegedly utilizing the tax department to starve the main opposition Congress party of India of funds in advance of elections that are scheduled to take place next month.

They had undertaken “a systematic effort to cripple the party financially,” according to Congresswoman Sonia Gandhi.
With 2.1 billion rupees ($25 million; £20 million) in its accounts, the party said that freezing them was “unprecedented and undemocratic.”.
The tax department and the news have not yet responded to the accusations.
At a press conference on Thursday, prominent Congressmen Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and treasurer Ajay Maken made the accusations.

The general election in India will be held in seven phases in the months of April and May. According to opinion surveys, Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will win, as will its supporters, who are aiming for a record-breaking third term in office.
The Congress said this month that the income tax (IT) department had frozen its bank accounts.
Mr. Maken announced on Thursday that 11 party accounts had their 2.1 billion rupees frozen and placed under lien, meaning they could not be taken out or moved.
