PESHAWAR: Speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Babar Saleem Swati was ordered by the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday to administer the oath to the legislators elected to reserved seats.
The ruling was made public following a hearing earlier today on a petition submitted by opposition parties in the province parliament concerning the swearing-in of the members by Justice Attique Shah and Justice Shakeel Ahmad of the PHC bench.
The controversy surrounding the oath-taking on reserved seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stems from the impasse between the opposition parties and the provincial administration. The opposition has opposed to the KP governor’s decision to call an assembly session at the opposition’s request.
Opposition groups on Monday included the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) had moved the PHC seeking timely oath-taking of members linking it to their ability to participate in the upcoming Senate elections.
