LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi was placed under physical remand for nine days on Tuesday by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in connection with eight cases involving the May 9 riots.

In a reserved ruling, Lahore ATC Judge Khalid Arshad directed that the inquiry report after Qureshi’s interview be turned in by June 5.

In its ruling, the court mandated that the PTI leader be questioned via video conference.

The suspect posted recordings and messages on social media, the investigating officer claimed, the court continued. It stated that all of the content Qureshi posted on social media had been forwarded to the forensic lab.

Qureshi is being held in numerous crimes at the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. In addition, Qureshi was sentenced to ten years in prison in the cipher case by a special court created under the Official Secrets Act.

On May 26, the PTI leader was charged by the police in eight additional offenses related to the incidents that occurred on May 9, 2023.

Following the arrest of ousted prime minister Imran Khan in connection with a £190 million settlement lawsuit, rioting broke out nearly nationwide on May 9.

Hundreds of PTI employees and high-ranking officials were imprisoned last year due to their involvement in acts of violence and attacks against military sites.

Miscreants targeted military and civil institutions during the riots, notably Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
