Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, arrived in Islamabad on Thursday for a two-day official visit at the request of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

When President Aliyev landed at the Nur Khan base of the Pakistan Air Force, PM Shehbaz and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi welcomed him with a red carpet. A 21-gun salute was also given to the foreign dignitary.

President Aliev will meet with the Prime Minister, President Asif Ali Zardari, and other high-ranking officials while in the country.

There’s a good chance that Islamabad and Baku will sign a number of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) as they prepare to hold extensive talks on areas of mutual interest to enhance bilateral cooperation.

The News had earlier claimed that President Zardari would meet with General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), and host a dinner in the president’s honor.

According to the publication, the foreign ministers of the two nations will hold discussions at the Foreign Office.

It was reported on Monday that five heads of state—save for the president of Azerbaijan—were scheduled to visit Pakistan over the course of the next five months. They are: President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nihan of the United Arab Emirates; Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia; Emir Tamim al-Thani of Qatar; and President Recep Erdogan of Turkey.
