Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan came under fire from Information Minister Attaullah Tarar for saying he was imprisoned in a death cell while, in reality, he was in a “presidential suite,” which is better than a middle-class family’s home.
You are letting the West know that you are having problems and that you are being held captive in a death cell. Tarar stated at a press conference in Islamabad that “this death cell is a ‘presidential suite’ in Adiala jail, which is better than a middle-class house.”
Through his attorneys, Imran stated in an interview with The Sunday Times that he was detained in a death cell, which is used to hold “terrorists” so “they have no contact with anyone.”
The 71-year-old politician and former cricket player has been incarcerated for nearly a year in three separate cases: the un-Islamic marriage case, the cipher case, and the Toshakhana case. Bushra Bibi, his spouse, is incarcerated as well.
In the Toshakhana case, a court did, however, suspend his sentence; in the cipher and iddat instances, other courts reversed his convictions.
Expectations that he and Bushra would be freed in July were shattered when they were arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on new allegations pertaining to the selling of goods from the state.
Imran has continued to assert that he is not receiving various facilities while he is incarcerated; nevertheless, the government has produced documentation proving that the PTI founder in Adiala is receiving certain facilities.
