Government officials have revealed that a new messaging program, positioned as a regional take on WhatsApp, will soon be available to the general public as well as government workers.
“Beep Pakistan” was unveiled in August of last year by Amin ul Haque, the former federal minister for information technology (IT), who positioned it as Pakistan’s local WhatsApp substitute.
“This marks a significant day for the IT sector in Pakistan,” Haque declared during the ribbon-cutting. “We are pleased to present Beep Pakistan, the first communication app in our nation.”
Nearly a year later, Haque—who is currently in charge of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Information Technology—told Geo Fact Check that Beep Pakistan is already being used for internal communications by government employees in the ministry of IT and its affiliated ministries.
The software allows for conference calls with up to 200 participants, audio, and video. He stated over the phone, “We will see the situation and launch it for the public too. [The government] aims to roll out the application for all government employees in the next 45 days.”
Haque emphasized that Beep Pakistan’s servers will be situated in Pakistan, in contrast to WhatsApp. He continued, “Beep’s data center will be in Pakistan, guaranteeing 100% safety and security.” “Pakistan now has its own app, just like China has WeChat and America has WhatsApp.”
Geo Fact Check repeatedly asked the current minister of state for information technology for remarks, but she never replied.
