US Border Patrol authorities apprehended approximately 57,000 migrants along the border in July, the lowest number since September 2020.
The figures are down dramatically from December, when approximately 250,000 people were apprehended crossing the border.
President Joe Biden’s administration has attributed the decline to his recent steps to combat illegal immigration into the United States, an election-year electoral vulnerability for Democrats.
“This is the result of a number of actions this administration has taken,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told the news this week.
Mr. Mayorkas stated that these efforts include an executive order signed last month by the president.
Some on the left of the party have denounced the measure, which has been called one of the strictest border policies by a Democratic president in living memory.
At the time, the president promised that his executive order would “help us regain control of our border.”. He went on to say that “doing nothing is not an option.”.
According to government data, the number of migrants stopped at the US-Mexico border had already decreased prior to the order.
