The federal administration is not studying any option to extend the tenure of judges, according to Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, dispelling rumors that the government is preparing to present legislation in parliament that would focus on the judiciary.
Tarar made the remarks in the wake of rumors that the current administration was considering revisions to the legislation pertaining to the seniority-based selection of top jurists and to lengthen the terms of office for judges.
The rumors gained momentum when word spread that the federal administration intended to call a joint session on August 28 in order to present important legislation.
When asked about the proposed constitutional changes on the news show “Naya Pakistan,” Tarar unequivocally denied the federal government’s alleged intentions to extend the chief justice’s tenure.
He further clarified that no constitutional amendment could be introduced during a joint session of the parliament.
