Tensions in the region have increased as a result of targeted missile strikes by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) on suspected “terrorist” targets in Syria and Iraq.
Reportedly, the goal of the IRGC was to destroy important locations where anti-Iranian elements were concentrated, such as a “spy headquarters” and a terrorist assembly in Arbil, the capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region.
Ballistic missiles were launched against gathering spots in Syria by the Guards in reaction to recent terrorist acts, especially the horrific suicide bombing that occurred close to IRGC General Qasem Soleimani’s grave in Kerman. The unjust martyrdom of Iranian nationals in Kerman and Rask was justified as a response to the crimes carried out by terrorist organizations.
The acts of Iran were denounced by the United States, as stated by State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
The US extends its condolences to the families of those slain and vehemently denounces Iran’s attacks in Erbil today. We reject Iran’s heedless missile attacks on Iraq, which jeopardize its stability.”
One example of the recent surge of violence is the suicide bombing near General Soleimani’s mausoleum, which was carried out and claimed by the Islamic State organization, killing about ninety people. One of the suicide bombers was identified by Iran’s intelligence agency as a Tajik national; the other’s identity is still a mystery.
In another incident, a police station in Rask, in the southeast province of Sistan-Baluchistan, was attacked by jihadists, claiming responsibility for the deaths of at least 11 Iranian police officers. The guilty party, Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice), was founded in 2012 and is prohibited from entering Iran.Complicating matters further, the IRGC declared that it had destroyed Mossad’s intelligence headquarters in the Iraqi Kurdistan region and claimed to have struck a purported Israeli target. The targeted headquarters was crucial to the development of espionage operations and the planning of terrorist acts in the area, according to IRGC claims.
