Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was chosen speaker of the National Assembly on Friday, and Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was elected deputy speaker.
Sadiq was elected as the 23rd speaker of the Lower House of Parliament with 199 votes, defeating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) nominee Malik Aamir Dogar, who received 91 votes. Later, Shah won 197 votes, defeating Junaid Akbar, who received 92.
Sadiq received the oath from outgoing speaker Raja Parvez Ashraf, while Shah received it from the newly elected speaker.
Following the oath-taking, the new speaker thanked the leaders of all major political parties for their confidence in his leadership.
