The Bristol-based street artist’s latest work depicts the silhouettes of two elephants with their trunks spread out towards each other.
It appears to be painted on two blocked-up windows on the side of a house at the intersection of Edith Terrace and Edith Grove, in Chelsea.
The elephants’ appearance comes after the artist claimed to have made an artwork of a goat perched on top of a tiny wall in Kew Bridge, west London, on Monday.
The silhouette of the animal is complemented by boulders tumbling from the ledge and a CCTV camera that occasionally points at it.
Banksy, whose identity is unknown, claimed to have made the elephant artwork and posted it on his official Instagram account, but he did not include a message, leaving followers to guess on its meaning.
Many speculated that it is a play on the expression “elephant in the room,” which refers to an obvious problem or tough situation that people do not want to discuss – a nod to Banksy’s typically sarcastic artwork, which occasionally draws on political and philosophical concerns.
Another person suggested that the elephants reaching out to each other could represent “the process of healing and reconciliation”.
