ISLAMABAD: Sources told Geo News on Wednesday that Amjad Zubair Tiwana, the chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Insiders claim that Tiwana asked to be removed from his position as head of the FBR by the Prime Minister’s Secretariat and that, after two days of waiting, he submitted his resignation.
According to the sources, before leaving his position, the FBR chairman conferred with over two cabinet members, and they requested that Tiwana step down.
According to The News, the sources claimed that Tiwana had spoken with Ahad Cheema, the PM’s close adviser on Establishment Division and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, and told him orally that he could not continue to lead the FBR.
According to sources, Tiwana was not given any cooperation by the senior officers of the tax collection body. They also mentioned that the FBR has over 21 executives senior to the chairman.
According to the sources, Tiwana was chosen during the caretaker government and is regarded as close to Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
The FBR chairman, a grade 21 Inland Revenue Service (IRS) officer, was scheduled to retire from the agency in February 2025, according to The News.
