After a 13-year wait, India won the World Cup on Saturday in Barbados by defeating South Africa by seven runs.
Following the game, supporters took to the streets to celebrate and have been sharing sincere social media tributes to the players.
However, three of India’s best cricketers, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja, announced their retirement from the format following the match, so the triumph is reportedly bitter-sweet.
While some X users referred to Kohli and Sharma’s retirement as “the end of an era,” others claimed they had become sports heroes.
Renowned cricketer Sachin Tendulkar also expressed his admiration for the two players.
Regarding Sharma on X, he remarked, “Your unwavering commitment and exceptional talent have brought immense pride to the nation.” He remarked of Kohli, “You may have had a difficult time earlier in the tournament, but you proved last night why you’re truly one of the gentleman’s game’s greats.”
After his team lost to Australia in the 50-over World Cup final eight months ago, Sharma saw his team’s victory on Saturday as a moment of atonement.
