WASHINGTON: According to data released Monday, the United States issued over one-fifth fewer student visas in August as a result of President Donald Trump’s crackdown. This was mostly due to a sharp decline in India, which was surpassed by China as the most popular country of origin.
The International Trade Commission reports that in August, the most popular start month for US institutions, the United States awarded 313,138 student visas, a 19.1% decrease from the same month in 2024.
With 44.5% fewer student visas granted than the previous year, India—which was the largest source of international students entering the US last year—saw the most significant decline.
Chinese students’ visa issuance decreased as well, though not nearly as quickly.
