In recognition of her efforts to advance gender equality, Major Sania Safdar of the Pakistan Army has been granted the ‘2023 – Certificate of Recognition’ by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). She holds this distinction as the first female UN peacekeeper.
Major Safdar’s services to the advancement of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) are acknowledged with this medal. Her efforts to advance gender representation in the military and her work in the Field Technology Section were highlighted by UNFICYP as important considerations in the selection process.
Major Safdar said that it is an honor for the mission and for her personally to receive this certificate as a peacekeeper. It shows their dedication to advancing gender equality, she said.
