LAHORE: With the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) emerging as the biggest party in the Punjab Assembly, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar told The News on Monday that party supremo Nawaz Sharif would soon select who would be the province’s next chief minister.

Tarar told a press conference on Sunday that the PML-N was consulting with allies to decide on a name for Punjab’s future chief executive. He further asserted that the PML-N would gain 160 seats in the Punjab Assembly.

The former law minister also expressed concern that an attempt was being made to cast doubt on the election results.

A party expressed concerns about the election results, but the same party celebrated the results in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and claimed that people had voted for them, he added, alluding to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) without using its name.

“We respect the mandate of all parties and expect the same spirit from others,” Azam Tarar said, noting that PML-N central leaders Khawaja Saad Rafique and Rana Sanaullah were also defeated in the polls.

Following the February 8 general elections, PML-N emerged as the largest party in the Punjab Assembly with 138 seats, followed by PTI-backed independents who received 116 seats, while the candidates who ran as independents, without any party’s backing, stood at 22, PPP at 10, PML-Q at 7, IPP, TLP and have one seat each
